Next playreading - Pyrenees by David Grieg
7pm, Monday 18 May 2026
The setting is a café terrace overlooking the Pyrenees mountains, where the characters can see a climber attempting a difficult route.
A middle-aged man is being interviewed by a young woman. He has lost his memory; she is from the embassy and is tasked with helping him remember who he is. They begin to develop a rapport.
At the end of Act One, a middle-aged woman arrives on the same route, claiming to be the man's wife. He rejects that and separately so does the young woman who accuses the second woman of 'muscling in'.
Throughout the play the hotel waiter/owner (who switches nationality even more than he switches jobs) follows with binoculars and comments on the progress of the climber.
'Grieg's play is insightful about the (...) gap between our self-perception and the way others see us. None of the characters (...) is quite what they seem, and yet no one can quite shrug off the persistent grip of the past.' -The Times in Scotland. A play often described as 'fascinating' and 'intriguing' - come and have a read and see what you think!
